Creating Your Backyard Oasis

With longer days and warmer temperatures, backyards are coming into use more and more. Most all of us have fond memories of running around in the yard, playing with friends and family, entertaining guests, and a whole number of other exciting times. To continue these memories, it's important to maintain our backyards carefully. More than that, we want to consider them an oasis. Somewhere that we can escape from the stressors of the working day in. Somewhere that we can gather with loved ones to have fun and entertain and share stories. Somewhere that we enjoy being. So how do we do that? There are several ways, so keep reading for ideas on how to create your own backyard oasis!

Incorporate Color and Patterns
A simple way to brighten up the space is by incorporating colors and patterns. This is very easy to do through adding pillows and blankets to backyard furniture. If you have a deck or patio, add these touches to the furniture there. If you want to take it a step further, use a rug! Decide on a color scheme and assemble the items together from that color scheme. Add variety through pillows of different sizes, textures, and patterns. Try to use fabrics that dry quickly, resist UV rays, and clean easily. Make sure the rug is sturdy and will handle the outdoors pretty well. These items will be outdoors, so they need to be able to handle the harsher climate. That doesn't mean they can't be stylish though! Depending on your color scheme, you could even make your backyard feel more like a beach vacation spot.

Have a Variety of Lounging Spots
As important as areas for outdoor dining and entertaining, a place to relax is key. Chairs and couches are always great options. They're comfortable, sturdy, and a great spot to gather around together in a group. But sometimes the backyard is meant more for solo time. A chaise lounge is a great option for sunbathing or taking a nap or even lounging with a good book. A hammock is also a great spot to curl up with a book or for a nap. The gentle rocking is a great comfort, and you can even find hammocks that are sturdy enough to hold more than one person.

Incorporate Plants
A deck or patio is a great spot to place some eye-catching planters with even more eye-catching plants. Flowers and greenery bring even more life to the backyard. Succulents in a small, shallow planters make for a great centerpiece. If the plants you choose are taller and lush, they can be used as a makeshift screen to piece off the areas of your backyard. If you want to take it a step further, set aside an area to grow your own herbs, fruits, and vegetables!

Plan Outdoor Lighting
Many of us will enjoy our backyard oasis well into the night. To really enjoy it, outdoor lighting is key. Porch lighting that illuminates access to the house and provides ambient lighting is the most basic thing that you need. If you have an outdoor kitchen, make sure that you have adequate lighting for the grill and work areas. Solar-powered accent lights are a great way to create a magical feeling throughout your yard while also providing the light needed to see the pathways. Having a variety of lighting sources will make your area stand out!

Don't Forget the Shade
On the hottest of days, no one wants to spend too much time in direct sunlight. Shade is crucial, and it makes it much easier to handle being outside with guests during the day. The amount of space you have and your budget will help you decide which option for shade you go for. Patio umbrellas, large trees, retractable awnings, and pergolas planted with vines are all suitable options.

Add an Outdoor Kitchen
If you're already a fan of grilling and eating outdoors, consider an outdoor kitchen. It can be as big or as small as you want it to be! It doesn't need to be super fancy unless you want to have that luxury. A grill, countertop for food prep, closed storage, and a separate side burner will enhance your outdoor cooking experience. Adding a refrigerator and sink will make the prep and clean up even easier.

Have Privacy
Unexpected visitors aren't always welcome visitors. That's why having an enclosed space is so important. It also helps it feel more like an oasis away from the world. Fences and garden walls ensure privacy for patios and decks. Lattice and pergolas are another great option that are extra pretty when paired with vines and plants growing on them. Landscaping can even be used as privacy depending on how you have it done.

Add a Hot Tub or Fire Pit - or Both!
You could even add a pool to your backyard, surrounded by beautiful plants and furniture. Hot tubs and fire pits are great options to go on your patios and decks. Fire pits are great for roasting marshmallows around late into the nights. Hot tubs, especially those with additional lighting, are also great for late nights. To determine the best location, consider privacy, access to the house, and whether you want the hot tub in sunshine or shade. Make sure that you're prepared for the hot tub to have a foundation separate from your deck/patio as it does weigh quite a bit.

Bring in the Art
Fountains, statues, and sculptures enhance the beauty of the outdoors by bringing in elements that are typically more indoors. Fountains are great if you enjoy that relaxing water sound. They also serve as great focal points in your yard. By adding in the ornamental touches with art pieces, you can create a more welcoming and personalize space.
